Terence Yap is a Singaporean Chinese with a passion and flare for writing. Born in 1960 to two highly regarded proponents of the English language, his mother tongue, as would be as expected, is English.
Groomed by highly proficient English teachers both at school and at home, Terence developed a strong foundation in this medium. His affinity to the English language was apparent as his subjects of choice were English Literature and English Essay Writing.
But the literary aspects of the Queen’s English differ greatly from that of American and Asian adaptations. Terence soon discovered this after his “O” levels.
His initiation into the local workforce found him gainfully engrossed with Grollier International, an American Company tasked with marketing Americana Encyclopedias. It was here that Terence first began to realise how little he really knew of the English language in its entirety.
Three decades have come and gone since then.
Terence’s experience with American, European and Asian corporations have furthered his private studies in the English Language.
From commercial copywriting in advertising agencies to press releases for internet businesses, he’s learnt that the targetted audience determines the brand of English to be used.
Experience has taught Terence that problems in communicating with people can be mitigated by utilising a brand of English that they can easily relate to. This is especially so when dealing with people of different ethnicities, cultures and religions.
